Roasting Skills Foundation
No coffee experience or pre-requisite needed.
This Specialty Coffee Association course is excellent for anyone looking to understand the roasting process and explore coffee roasted to different levels.
This is an in-person or distance learning course. To participate online you will need access to good working internet and a laptop or tablet. Coffee brewing equipment is also necessary to participate in the tasting exercises. Use your own or we can provide equipment options at a small additional cost. In this course we will discuss:
Roaster Basics - methods and types of roasters
Roasting Process - physical changes, creating and using a roast profile, stages of roast and the impact on taste and aroma, and logging a roast
Safety and Maintenance - cleaning, maintenance, and roaster safety
Course Fees: $300 includes instruction, coffee tasting, digital or printed course materials, and shipping in the USA. Specialty Coffee Association certificate available for an additional $50 certificate fee.

Roasting Skills Intermediate
No pre-requisite needed but at least 6 months of coffee experience including tasting or Foundation
This course is ideal for someone who has some roasting experience and desires to gain a deeper understanding of the roast profile, how the profile relates to color, the relationship between roast profile and sensory expression, and the impact of development time.
This course can be taken as a hybrid, online/in-person or fully in-person.
The Roasting Intermediate course builds upon the introductory concepts of the Foundation course. Learners will further explore the physical and chemical changes as well as basic thermodynamics and heat transfer that occurs during the roast. Thereafter there will be an introduction to sample roasting and a review of safety and maintenance protocols in the roasting plant. A written exam tests intermediate course knowledge while a practical exam assesses the learner’s ability to roast correctly and remove the coffee at the correct color using a reference, while accurately completing the roast log form.
Course Fees: $1250 includes instruction, roasted and unroasted coffee supplies, digital or printed course materials. SCA Certificate is available for an additional $100 certificate fee.
Roasting Skills Professional
Roasting Intermediate pre-requisite and 3 months of time between Intermediate and Professional
This course is ideal for someone who has a deep understanding and at least one year of roasting experience or has completed the Roasting Intermediate course and had 3 months of roasting experience.
Over three days we will explore concepts and share experiences with other professional roasters. Curriculum includes physical and chemical make-up of green coffee and how it changes due to roasting, thermodynamics, sensory investigation of development modulation, the sensory of quality control, wholesale and retail business, and roastery management.
Course Fees: $1250 includes instruction, roasted and unroasted coffee supplies, digital or printed course materials. SCA Certificate is available for an additional $100 certificate fee.
